Resources for Traditional Chinese Medicine

The National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health provides a comprehensive bibliography (through 1997) of Western medical studies about acupuncture.

The Acupuncture Association of Washington has links to evidence-based research on the efficacy of acupuncture on a variety of health conditions.

Holistic Online provides a more in-depth explanation of the fundamentals of traditional Chinese medicine.

The National Qigong Organization explains what Qigong is, and how this gentle form of physical activity can enhance health and well being.

National Acupuncture Detoxification Association provides a limited explanation of how acupuncture can help in withdrawal from addictive substances.

The Whole Foods Market website offers a very good description of traditional Chinese medicine. They also offer the following valid caution:
“ Acupuncturists in California and Nevada must take an exam in order to dispense Chinese herbs. In other states, herbal certification is voluntary. Ask if your acupuncturist has passed the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine herbal exam.”

(In contrast to the majority of acupuncturists trained in Washington State, I have passed the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine herbal exam. I was trained in California, am licensed there as well, and so have passed their exam, which includes Chinese herbal medicine).
